Following Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address to Congress, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“Tonight, Donald Trump tried to sell a fantasy about his economic record. But Americans aren’t buying it—they’re paying higher and higher bills. Trump promised to cut energy prices in half within a year. Instead, 164 million households faced higher electric or gas bills since he took office, and those families paid hundreds of dollars more than they would have under his promised cut.
“Now, Trump unveiled yet another pledge with no deal and no details. How many times will Trump try to sell us on the same empty promises? His administration is continuing to block the cheapest, cleanest sources of new power that could meet rising demand from data centers and actually lower costs: wind, solar, and battery storage.
“After fossil fuel executives pledged $1 billion in campaign support, Trump delivered. He ripped up billions in clean energy projects, rewrote the rules to sabotage the cheapest, fastest-to-deploy sources of new power, funneled taxpayer dollars to prop up dirty, expensive coal plants, and stripped the EPA of its authority to protect Americans from dangerous pollution. The result is a federal government transformed into a polluter-protection racket, where donors are rewarded, and families pay the price with higher bills and greater climate risks. Nothing said tonight can hide that his promise to lower costs was always a con, and every Republican who enables this corrupt, deeply unpopular agenda shares responsibility for the higher bills American families now face.”
