In response to the news that Trump’s Department of Energy (DOE) is illegally terminating $7.5 billion in energy grants, most of which were awarded to states that did not vote for him in the 2024 election, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“Donald Trump isn’t even trying to hide his administration’s blatant corruption. Just days after his party shut down the government and handed him more unchecked power, Trump is already using it to punish his political opponents. He’s tearing up billions in legally awarded clean energy projects—initiatives to modernize the grid, cut pollution, and create thousands of jobs. There is no law that allows the president to rip up binding contracts simply because he doesn’t like how a state voted. This is political retribution, plain and simple. And it will leave working families stuck with higher bills, fewer jobs, and dirtier air.
“They’re engaging in the same pattern of abuse we’ve seen again and again: Trump and his allies sabotaging energy projects while electricity prices soar—and then bragging about it. And he’s doing this while funneling hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars to coal barons to prop up dirty, expensive fossil fuels. Make no mistake, these targeted cancellations are an unconstitutional abuse of power, an assault on the rule of law, and a direct attack on American families.”
