Today, Senate Republicans voted to gut Clean Air Act protections against guidance from the Government Accountability Office and the Senate parliamentarian. In an extraordinary move, they executed a series of procedural maneuvers to conduct an end-run around the parliamentarian's ruling that California's Clean Air Act waivers are not subject to review under the Congressional Review Act. In response, Evergreen Action States Vice President Justin Balik released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans just voted to put corporate polluters over people in a brazen attack on Clean Air Act protections. In an unprecedented move, they defied their own parliamentarian and cast aside long-standing Senate rules, trampling decades of legal precedent to launch a dangerous assault on states’ rights to protect their residents from toxic air. With this vote, they’ve made their priorities clear: fossil fuel profits come before the health of the people they were elected to serve.”
