Same Sabotage, Different Timeline As Senate GOP Moves to Hike Americans’ Energy Bills

Today, Senate Finance Committee Republicans released draft legislative text for their portion of the GOP’s sweeping megabill, a tax giveaway built by and for the billionaire donor class. Like the House version, the Senate proposal would end clean energy tax credits well ahead of current law. It also cuts electric vehicle incentives critical to the auto industry and undermines investments made by American businesses in clean fleets, putting hundreds of thousands of jobs in states like Michigan at risk. In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Let’s not pretend otherwise: Senate Republicans are still trying to kill the clean energy tax credits that are our best tool for abating skyrocketing electricity bills and reviving American manufacturing leadership—just on a marginally slower timeline. Whether they repeal them outright or phase them out early, the result is the same: higher costs for working families and a less stable grid. Even the nation’s largest electric utility is warning of shortages and blackouts if we slow clean energy growth. Demand is surging, and Trump’s harebrained inflationary policies are already squeezing families. This plan would gut the tools we need to keep power affordable and reliable.

“Meanwhile, they’re also targeting electric vehicle tax credits, putting American manufacturing jobs on the line. While China races ahead on clean cars, Senate Republicans are poised to drive a growing U.S. industry off a cliff.

“Senate Republicans want credit for being less extreme than their House colleagues, but they’re still siding with Big Oil to jack up prices and kill jobs. Families will pay the price on their utility bills while Republicans’ fossil fuel donors cash in.”
