Republicans Set to Hijack Senate Rules to Attack the Clean Air Act

In response to the news that Senate Republicans intend to disregard the Senate parliamentarian’s ruling that California’s Clean Air Act waivers are not subject to repeal under the Congressional Review Act and plow ahead with a vote to block them, Evergreen Action States Vice President Justin Balik released the following statement:

“Senate Republicans are threatening to blow up decades of precedent and shred the very rules they once claimed to defend. Just months ago, Leader Thune warned that overruling the parliamentarian was ‘totally akin to killing the filibuster.’ Now they’re doing exactly that and setting a dangerous precedent that would give them unchecked power to dismantle rules they don’t like. It’s a lawless power grab that would strip states of their ability to protect people from rising energy costs, toxic air, and climate-fueled disasters—and puts our clean air and bedrock climate protections at risk.”
