PJM Members Duck Responsibility to Address Skyrocketing Data Center Demand, Rising Costs

In response to the news that the PJM Members Committee declined to advance any of the proposals under consideration to address skyrocketing data center demand and rising household energy costs and punted the decision to the PJM Board of Managers, Evergreen Action Deputy State Policy Director Julia Kortrey released the following statement:

“Residents across PJM states have made themselves abundantly clear: they want lower energy bills, and they want PJM to get serious about protecting ratepayers. Today’s refusal to advance any proposals is a clear sign that PJM member companies are feeling mounting pressure from the public, governors, and consumer advocates. The effort to finally hold PJM accountable to consumers is gaining momentum, and PJM Members are clearly trying to avoid taking a stand. They know—and the public knows—that the gap between what’s good for families and what’s good for member companies’ profits has never been wider.

“Today, PJM members signaled they don’t want to take the heat for a bad decision that would raise bills and leave families subsidizing utility and Big Tech executives’ push for unchecked data center growth. Now, PJM’s Board of Managers must do the right thing in the final vote this week. We urge them to stand with ratepayers, reject any plan that shifts costs onto households, and finally put lowering bills ahead of corporate profits.”
