In the early hours of the morning, House Republicans passed their sweeping, multi-trillion-dollar tax package, which, if enacted, would represent one of the largest wealth transfers from average Americans to billionaires and corporate polluters in modern history. The bill effectively repeals most clean energy tax credits, reignites the Republican war on health care, and will drive up household costs across the board for working families.

In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“House Republicans just voted to jack up prices, kill jobs, and rip away basic lifelines from working families by taking a sledgehammer to programs and investments that make life more affordable. Their bill will effectively impose a backdoor energy tax, eliminate more than one million clean energy jobs, slash food assistance, and kick millions off their health care. It’s a full-scale assault on the people they were elected to serve.

“Republicans will now return home and claim, with a straight face, that this bill saves people money. But it was engineered to hide the harm. If passed into law, Americans will wake up to find the GOP quietly reached into their wallets and handed their hard-earned cash to corporate polluters and billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump. It’s one of the most shameless grifts in modern history, led by the same Republicans whose own districts are benefiting from the clean energy investments they just voted to kill. The Senate must stop this catastrophe before it inflicts lasting damage on our economy, our climate, and the working people who stand to lose the most.”
