EVERGREEN: WHPA Vote Failure Should Not Be The End of The Road

In response to the Senate vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“Leaders at all levels of government must respond to the Supreme Court’s attack on long-established basic rights: from the right to bodily autonomy to the right to clean air and water. Today’s failure in the U.S. Senate to protect the fundamental right to a safe and legal abortion reflects the fundamental flaws within our democratic system that allow powerful interests to block the will of the American people. Those flaws will not be fixed overnight, but we are prepared to stay in the fight with our allies in the reproductive justice movement to protect every American’s fundamental rights to bodily autonomy and to a healthy and livable future. In the short term that will require leadership from state governments to protect abortion access. In the long term that must include a federal law enshrining abortion rights, and meaningful court reform like expansion to prevent extremist judges and this current illegitimate Supreme Court from dismantling even more of our rights. This packed, right-wing Supreme Court stands poised to gut long-standing precedent on Roe v. Wade, the Clean Air Act, and more. We stand together with our allies in committing to protect these basic human rights.”

According to recent polling from Data for Progress, a strong majority of likely voters support both keeping Roe v. Wade in place and passing the Women’s Health Protection Act.
