Evergreen: New Climate Targets Reflect Growing Momentum in Nationwide Climate Leadership

In response to the news that President Biden announced a new climate target under the Paris Agreement to reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 61-66 percent by 2035 from 2005 levels, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“This important goal is a vital step toward preserving American climate leadership and keeping the world on track to achieving a safer, more livable future. Even as we face a more uncertain political era, it reflects the growing momentum across the country to drive meaningful progress in the fight against climate change—no matter who occupies the White House.

“Achieving this target will require bold leadership and action across all levels of government. In the immediate term, rejecting pending LNG export authorizations could significantly curb climate pollution and help set us on the path to success. At the same time, state and local governments must seize this moment to continue advancing ambitious climate action, even in the face of federal opposition. The resolve of communities and leaders nationwide ensures that climate action will move forward—and these critical targets remain within reach.”
