Evergreen Action Launches New Campaign to Drive Towards President Biden’s 100% Clean Power Commitment

Today, Evergreen Action is launching a new campaign and action hub for its 100% Clean Power Campaign. The site will serve as an action hub for advocates across the climate movement to help ensure the administration keeps powering towards its goal of 100% clean electricity by 2035. The site will arm advocates with a set of tools and resources for engaging, including:

  • Rule Tracker
      • The Rule Tracker will include pertinent dates and information for upcoming rules–such as the open and close periods for public comments.
  • Action Center
      • The Action Center provides visitors with easy ways to take direct action during rule comment periods, while also keeping them up to date on ways to stay involved.
  • Partner Toolkit
      • The Partner Toolkit provides a resource toolbox for partners throughout the climate movement, including items such as social media content and important notices or information.
  • Campaign Summary
      • The Campaign Summary lays out our strategy of the three-pronged approach and how it can power us toward 100% clean power.
  • Resource Hub
    • The Resource Hub provides links to resources that go into further detail on certain elements of our 100% clean strategy. This is a great place to find more information or updates on the nitty-gritty of this campaign.

“Moving our power grid away from dependence on fossil fuels is our most powerful tool to fight climate change and supercharge America’s transition to an equitable and prosperous clean energy future,” said Evergreen Action Co-Founder and Senior Advisor Sam Ricketts. “To drive towards President Biden’s commitment to achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035, his administration must move quickly to deploy an all-out-mobilization across agencies to tackle pollution in the power sector, facilitate clean energy deployment, and invest in clean energy leadership and innovation at the state level. Evergreen’s new action hub will serve as a tool for advocates and allies to track and engage directly in the mission to achieve 100% clean energy through every step of the regulatory process.

“A just transition to 100% clean energy is absolutely critical in the fight against the climate crisis,” said Chesapeake Climate Action Network Executive Director Mike Tidwell. “Chesapeake Climate Action Network has made 100% clean energy a top agenda item at both the state and federal levels. Our climate coalition understands that for President Biden to deliver on his goal of 100% clean energy by 2035, he will need to both pass major climate legislation and deliver executive action. We are proud to work with Evergreen Action to ensure we are using all of the tools in our toolbox to deliver this clean energy future for all.”

“To stay on track towards President Biden’s commitment to 100% clean electricity by 2035, which is supported by a majority of voters, the administration must move quickly this year to deliver both a reconciliation bill with robust climate investments and executive actions that can open the floodgates for the clean energy deployment necessary to meet their goal,” said Data for Progress Political Director Marcela Mulholland. “Crucially, EPA, FERC, and the DOE must lead to address power sector pollution, level the playing field for clean energy deployment, and invest in state clean energy leadership. The combination of these actions with investments from Congress can set the power sector on course to hit the president’s clean electricity target, all while saving lives, creating jobs, and reducing energy costs for consumers in the process.”

After Governor Jay Inslee set the high watermark in the 2020 presidential field with his 100% clean energy by 2035 standard, Evergreen Action founders and former Jay Inslee aides pushed the Biden campaign to embrace that ambitious goal. When then-candidate Biden released his updated climate platform in July of 2020, a 100% clean electricity by 2035 goal was a cornerstone of his plan. And when President Biden took office in 2021, he reaffirmed his commitment to that target.

Evergreen Action previously released a roadmap for how the Biden administration can power towards its goal of 100% clean electricity this year. This strategy uses a three-pronged approach for a clean energy transition that engages agencies throughout the Biden administration, focused on three agencies with a key role to play in the clean energy transition.

The EPA must drive down pollution in the power sector using its existing authorities to regulate air and water pollution. FERC must facilitate clean energy deployment by leveling the playing field for clean electricity in wholesale power markets. And DOE must invest in state clean energy leadership, starting with the $62 billion of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding flowing through their agency for clean energy initiatives.
