Trump’s deranged cycle of retaliatory tariffs and annexation threats are shockingly not lowering energy bills

In an unhinged morning Truth Social screed, Donald Trump announced new retaliatory tariffs on Canada in response to Ontario’s tariffs on electricity exports to the U.S.—which were themselves a reaction to the trade war Trump started. He also declared plans to impose a “national emergency on electricity” to address a crisis of his own making, all while reviving his absurd annexation fantasy about one of America’s closest allies and trading partners.

In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has no real plan to lower energy costs. What he’s offering instead is a death spiral of retaliatory tariffs that are raising prices for Americans alongside deranged foreign policy threats. His latest outburst threatens to send energy prices soaring and push key industries into chaos. Instead of addressing real solutions to lower costs for families, Trump is doubling down on the same failed policies that will raise prices on everything from steel to cars while destabilizing American energy markets.

“This is a manufactured crisis of Trump’s own making. Ontario has already made clear that if his trade war continues, it will consider cutting off electricity exports to the U.S. entirely, leaving millions of homes and businesses facing blackouts and higher energy bills. Trump’s plan is antagonizing and threatening one of our closest allies while declaring a nebulous 'national emergency on electricity' to deal with the consequences. Americans deserve a serious strategy to lower energy costs, not this dangerous mix of economic sabotage and authoritarian delusion.”
