In response to the news that Trump’s Department of Transportation is proposing to eliminate mass transit funding, Evergreen Action Senior Transportation Policy Lead Liya Rechtman released the following statement:
“These proposals are an egregious federal overreach. The Trump administration is attempting to strip states of their long-standing right to decide how best to provide freedom of movement for residents and businesses. For more than four decades, Republicans and Democrats have agreed that states—not Washington—should choose the most effective, affordable transportation solutions for their communities. Taking away the tools that governors rely on to cut costs, improve mobility, and offer people real choices will leave communities across the country worse off.
“At a moment when families are already feeling squeezed, the administration is trying to limit transportation options, increase car dependence, and force everyone onto the most expensive possible path. States should be able to invest in what works—whether that’s transit, EV charging, biking and walking infrastructure, or safer local roads. Undermining that authority just means fewer choices for the public, more congestion on the roads, and higher bills for the people who can least afford it.”
Earlier this year, Evergreen published “States Have More Power Than They Think to Fund Sustainable Transportation,” laying out the authority states have to transfer funding to EVs, walking, and biking projects, and away from costly highways. You can read the full piece here.
