Deputy Communications Director

Position Summary 

As a member of the Communications team, the Deputy Communications Director will help shape Evergreen’s short and long-term communications plans, lead communications on Evergreen’s federal policy campaigns, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive media coverage in service of Evergreen’s organizational goals. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and communicator with significant experience developing relationships with reporters and working with the press, including on-the-record experience, story pitching, rapid response, and social media. The Deputy Communications Director will report to the Communications Director.

What You Will Do

  • Provide thought leadership in developing and continuously refining Evergreen’s communications and narrative strategies
  • Collaborate with policy and campaigns teams to design and execute communications plans for federal organizational priorities that proactively seek out news opportunities and creative placement strategies
  • Draft and edit press statements, memos, op-eds, and other press-facing materials
  • Build and maintain relationships with national climate and political reporters
  • Manage Press Associate (hiring late 2024), provide guidance to members of the communications team on best practices, and help ensure ongoing communications work is aligned with organizational goals
  • Represent Evergreen in tables across the climate movement and work alongside allied organizations and coalition partners to coordinate messaging and communications strategy toward shared goals


First-Year Milestones

In your first 90 days you will have….

  • Developed a strong working knowledge of Evergreen’s policy positions and advocacy strategy in core areas of work
  • Taken ownership of executing communications plans for federal policy priorities

In 6 months you will have…

  • Taken over communications planning for all federal campaigns
  • Successfully identified opportunities and landed press coverage for every major federal policy priority

In 1 year you will have…

  • Developed deep policy and advocacy strategy knowledge to inform communications plans, reporter conversations, and communications team management
  • Worked with Communications Director to map out storytelling priorities and communications plans for 2025


What You Bring

  • At least 5 years of experience in campaigns, issue advocacy, or a related field
  • At least 1 year of people management in a related field
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and learn quickly
  • Experience coming up with story ideas and finding creative ways to drive press
  • Strong written and verbal skills, with a proven track record of placing quotes in news stories through either written statements or interviews
  • Project management experience and an ability to multitask
  • Ability to build and execute robust communications plans across multiple related but distinct issues and campaigns
  • Willingness to pick up pieces of projects when needed, as well as take ownership of projects and see them through to completion.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with teammates across multiple teams
  • Passion for defeating climate change 

 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $125,000/year. To maintain internal pay parity, salaries are non-negotiable. Employees can increase wages through annual cost of living, performance-based pay increases, and promotions.
